Evangeline, formerly Copacetic, is a 38’ Philip Rhodes designed cutter built at the Cheoy Lee yard in Hong Kong in 1962. Rhodes had nearly 40 years of experience designing craft of every description when he penned Evangeline and it shows.  She’s beautiful and functional, an exceedingly well executed take on a very traditional design brief.  The Cheoy Lee Yard used only the best materials and built Evangeline to an exceptional level of fit and finish inside and out.  She has been thoughtfully upgraded, well maintained and equipped, and has benefited from a lot of recent work under her current ownership.

On deck, Evangeline is very much what you’d expect of a cruising boat of her vintage; Sitka Spruce mast head rig, dynel over plywood deck and house top, varnished teak cockpit, cabin house, hatches and toe rail.  There’s a fold up table in the cockpit and plenty of storage under the seats and in the laz.  Evangeline’s deck gear has been sensibly modernized for ease of use but in a way that retains traditional appearance.  She has a furler on her headstay, a removable inner forestay, a new bronze electric windlass, a bow roller for the anchor and modern Lewmar bronze self-tailing winches.  Evangeline had her topsides and varnish done since she was last in the water and everything is in perfect aesthetic condition.

Down below, Evangeline has a very traditional interior cruising boat layout.  It’s comfortable, makes good use of the available space and feels airy and well-lit for a classic boat interior thanks to the balance of white paint and varnished joinery.  The galley is at the base of the companionway.  Just forward there are two settee berths outboard of a central drop leaf table and a P.E. Luke solid fuel stove on the forward bulkhead.  The head is forward to port, a locker/pass-through to starboard and V-berth private cabin in the bow.  The joinery is a top notch and she has a lot of clever design features that maximize storage and hide her modern systems.

Evangeline is near perfect, turn-key classic cruising boat and a great value at her current price.  She’s very original, exceptionally well maintained, and has been upgraded to include all the conveniences and equipment you’d expect on a modern boat.  Evangeline is currently in storage in Rockport ME and ready for showings.
