50′ 1985 Bruce King Cutter
$350,000
The 57’ LOA cutter Saskianna was drawn by Bruce King the pioneering cold molded/Modern Classic designer responsible for Whitehawk, Alejandra, Whitefin, and the original Hinckley picnic boat. The brief was for a mini superyacht, an aft cabin center-cockpit cruising boat with a powerful push-button cutter rig and the systems, carrying capacity and interior space for extended cruising in serious comfort.
With her taffrail and clipper bow Saskianna, like many of King’s designs, has a classic, L.F. Herreshoff aesthetic but thoroughly modern engineering and design. Her ample beam and full sections allow for a spacious, comfortable, well divided center cockpit/aft master cabin interior, with ample light and headroom throughout. Her shoal, fin keel underbody and a high aspect, modern cutter rig mean the interior doesn’t come at the cost a cumbersome draft or poor windward performance.
On deck Saskianna is much as you’d expect for a Modern Classic cruising boat of her size, plenty of room to move around, well-kept varnished cabin, cap rail and hatches, teak decks and a dynel cabin house top. Her central cockpit is secure and ergonomic, long enough to stretch out in and well sheltered by her dodger. All the control lines for her two furling headsails and mast furling main are led to cockpit winches (4 powered and 2 manual) meaning she can be sailed by a single person without leaving the cockpit.
With her climate control, plentiful storage, spacious well laid out salon, two ensuite private cabins at either end of the boat, and spare berths for visitors she’s exceptionally versatile: comfortable for a family, two couples or a couple and full-time crew, a perfect charter or long distance cruising boat.
Saskianna is being offered for sale by her second owners. They’ve had her for 27 years during which they’ve run a successful charter business, cruised her extensively and maintained her meticulously. The longevity of their ownership proves that Bruce King got it right when he conceived of Saskianna or as King’s contemporary and fellow modern classic designer Joel White put it more eloquently:
“Saskianna is large enough to provide a truly comfortable home afloat for extended periods of time. Self-sufficient, seaworthy, and capable of fast passages, she should make an ideal cruiser for those who want – and can afford – to travel first class.”
