30′ Alberg Odyssey

Built in 1959, Métisse is hull #1 of Carl Alberg’s Alberg Odyssey 30 class.  The compact cruiser-racer design was commissioned, and the hulls built, by a trio of speculative San Francisco sailors and engineers in the late 50’s.  They were looking for a design for sailing on the San Francisco Bay but also suitable for offshore use, built to the MORC rule (Micro Offshore Racing Club).

The Odyssey 30s were very heavily built and shared a lot of the aesthetic and design features of their wooden predecessors. The result is beautiful, traditional shape above and below the waterline, and a clever balance of aesthetics and ease of maintenance.  She has varnished cabin sides, a teak cockpit, plywood dynel house top and decks.  Métisse has the look and sailing characteristics of a traditionally built plank on frame boat and the maintenance regimen of a fiberglass one.

The current owner has kept the boat in excellent condition and has made a number of sensible upgrades to the rig, deck, machinery.  Métisse was recently restored to her original color with a new Awlgrip paintjob, and is a real head-turner.  She’s currently stored under a new canvass winter cover here in Rockport and is available for showings.
