Koukla is a ruggedly built vessel built from tropical woods, is outfitted with long distance cruising in mind and can take you anywhere. This boat has been used as a family cruiser and charter boat. The interior appointments are of high quality and loaded with character. The current owners are knowledgeable sailors and engineers who have routinely kept the boat in exceptional condition.

Planking and ceiling: Formosan red cyprus, 1 3/4″ thick. Bronze screw fastened.
Frames, stem knee, and forefoot knee: Dragon’s eye, a dark red wood 50% stronger and stiffer than white oak. Frames are double sawn, sided and molded 2 1/2 ”
Keel: Taiwan red oak. Not similar to US red oak. It is harder and denser with a resin which seals the pores.
Stem, engine beds and beams: Eastern acacia, a tougher version of our black locust.
Shelves, clamp and belt construction: Batu, a strong teak like wood, available in long lengths.
Masts: Hollow box section of Taiwanese spruce.
Decks, bulwarks, cabin trunk, and cabin sole: Teak.
Interior main saloon paneling and other interior trim: Rosewood.
Steering: Edson Robinson worm gear. Second steering station inside cockpit dog house with disconnect clutch. Simrad AP20 Auto pilot, with rotary chain drive.

Koukla was built over a 4 year period in Taiwan, under the direct supervision of the designer’s son, George Stadel Jr. She was designed to be a classic yacht of the highest standards and best materials, based on the Gloucester fishing schooners, for a New York client. With a professional captain and a crew of friends, the owner sailed Koukla across the Pacific , thru the Panama Canal and up to New York. There she became a familiar sight on New York harbor and Long Island Sound, and participated in Op Sail 1986, and Op Sail 1992. After that she made a round trip voyage to the Caribbean, wintering in St. Maartin.
Unfortunately shortly after this, the owner’s health failed, and he spent many years in the hospital, during which Koukla was neglected. After the death of the owner, Koukla was bought by Horatio (Ted) and Beverly Cowan of Rockland, Maine, with the intent of restoring Koukla to her previous glory and visions of extended cruising with their family.
Although the hull, deck and interior had survived her neglect and remained in excellent shape, many items needed substantial repair and equipment upgrades.
The list included:
*Replacement of lower 10 feet of main mast due to water incursion in failed glue joints.
-Mast opened up, bad wood replaced, new wire runs and wire installed, insides painted and mast epoxied together.
*Repair of foremast glue joints in the process of failing. Seams routed out and splines epoxied in.
*New teak battens installed on both masts.
*New bowsprit due to failed glue joints and rot around bow pulpit attachment points. Bow pulpit attached by pot bolting. Anchor rollers fabricated and installed.
*Replacement of fwd bits to inspect for possible deteoriation by water logged bowsprit.
* Rebuilding of both sets of cross trees on Fore and Main masts.
*All rigging disassembled and leathering removed for inspection, then parceled, served and releathered. All new straps for halyard blocks fabricated and installed.
*Steering gear replaced with Edson robinson worm gear and new wheelbox designed and installed.
*Teak davits installed to ease access to end of main boom, and for lifting tender/inflatable from water for coastwise cruising.
*Inside steering station designed with shaft and chain drive with disconnect clutch .
*New Radar installed.
*Generator removed and overhauled, and mounting location moved to facilitate access to machinery for maintenance and repair.
*Main engine lifted and disassembled in place to check condition and perform overhaul as necessary. New piston rings, raw water pump, fuel lift pump, injectors tested. New split coupling, new shaft, new shaft lock, new shaft seal, new max prop propeller, new cutlass bearing. All new fuel lines and fuel tank distribution manifold redesigned and rebuilt for cross connecting tanks with filters and transfer pump.
*All sea cocks removed and rebuilt or replaced, with and all new hoses.
*All tanks opened and cleaned and inspected. Replaced grey water tank and holding tank.
*All bilges cleaned, and some areas painted.
*All new wiring, electronics, and instruments.
*All new plumbing and pumps.

In 2001, The Cowan’s left for a 9 month’s cruise of the Caribbean, homeschooling their 2 children along the way. In 2010, the family of the original owner, and a group of friends that used to sail Koukla, assembled in Maine and went sailing with the Cowan’s. Their assessment was that Koukla was now in better condition than she was when new. In 2011, Bill Courduff, a sailing buddy of the original owner, Thomas Soulantzos, wrote a book which covers the original building of Koukla, called “Butterfly on the Water”, and is available on Amazon.
In 2013, the Cowan’s once again set sail for the Caribbean, also with their children, but with 2 extra crew, a son-in-law and girlfriend. These adventures can be read about at:
During the latest trip to the Caribbean, Koukla made her debut at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, where she held her own in attendance of some of the best classic yachts of the world. Her sailing tender even won the award for best yacht tender in the Concourse D’elegance.
Having spent much of the last 15 years in obscurity as work on her restoration has continued, she is now attracting attention wherever she goes, and has begun a new life doing custom charters in Mid Coast Maine.
At present Koukla has a berth at Windjammer Wharf in Rockland, Maine.
