53′ Gilcraft Staysail Schooner

METANI was built in Geelong Australia in 1983 by Gilcraft Yachts. She is based on Alden’s MALABAR X, but was given more sheer and freeboard for the Southern Ocean.  METANI is constructed of New Zealand and Australian tropical hardwoods:  She is Kauri planked and copper riveted.  Originally she served as an observation boat for the America’s Cup races.  Later, she was cruised through the Western Pacific, up the Red Sea to the Med and eventually to the Caribbean and the US.  METANI ran crewed charters for several years and the boat became very well known in the Caribbean from Antigua to Grenada.

The current owners have owned METANI for 10 years, living onboard for extended periods. They are the second owners and have consistently cared for and updated the boat.

This past winter, METANI sailed to the Leeward Islands, culminating in the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta.  She took third in the schooner class, behind JUNO and HERON.  METANI has done Antigua Classic’s many times (twice under her current stewardship) the first time being, 1994, the year she won the Concours D’elegance.  METANI won the Gloucester Schooner Festival Race in 2009.

METANI has been cruised extensively and is equipped for passage making and lengthy live-aboard cruises. She was cruised from Charleston, SC to St. Kitts and the Islands in January 2017, and returned in May 2017. The current owners have just completed significant bottom work (most butts refreshed). To be ready for another cruise she needs only to take on fuel, water and stores.
