41′ K. Aage Nielsen Sloop


In 1964 a collaboration between K. Aage Nielsen, Paul Luke and William Drake (owner) began the life GOLDEN HIND ( Passage). She was the fourth in the No. 324 series designed by Nielsen, 324D.


The correspondence in the design process between these three gentlemen is worth a novel.This original correspondence and documentation has been carefully preserved and will go to the new owner of Passage. Mr. Drake was 6’ 5’’ and hence bunks were all extended, the cabin roof raised in the galley and a special child proof liquor cabinet built in, still with it’s original key and string. The combination of a fixed keel combined with a fully retractable cast bronze center board, gives her a 9’ 8’’ draft to windward, which she does well and with ease. And there is much more. She was built in the Luke Yard in East Boothbay to their legendary standards and still sports all the original Luke foundry touches, including ports, feathering prop, cleats, spinnaker pole, whisker pole, pedestal and more.
Remarkably , in 50 years since her 1966 launch she has had only three loving owners and remains essentially “original” while having been in the continuous meticulous care over the last 30+ years in the hands of the world class Rockport Marine yard. As in the title to the recent K. Aege Nielsen book, she is truly “Worthy of the Sea”.
In that book, Maynard Bray and Tom Jackson write in Chapter Six, “A parallel Evolution: The Racing Sloops” , regarding the 324 series “ Five boats were built ..all but one sloops. The choice of rigs reflected keen racing interests of these owners…low profile..nothing to impede visibility.’s cross section gave the boat a boost to windward close hauled and as additional ballast as the wind piped up.”
Passage sports an autopilot, essentially new sails – main and jib,recent new shaft, cutlass bearings, bottom fully stripped and repainted this past winter all by and to Rockport Marine standards. A recent Survey by Giffy Full and Associates is available.

Principal Particulars of Auxiliary Yawl28’9”Design No. 324-DK Aage NielsenPlanking:To be double. Using Honduras Mahogany for Outer Skin, and White Cedar for inside skin. In skin thickness to be 5/16” and outside skin thickness to be ¾”. Total plank thickness 1 1/16”. Two layers to have white lead between. Inside to outside screws to be flathead. White Lead between. 7/8” #9. Planking fastened to frames with 2-1/4”x14 screws. All fastenings Everdur, and butts are to be through fastened to butt block with fin head bolts, or adequate copper rivets.Frames:
Of white oak, laminated, and spaced 18” and 9 ¾” on centers. Regularly sided: 1-131/6th and molded 1-3/4”. Frames in ends of boat to be sided 1-1/16” and molded 1-5/8”. Frames from forward end of mainmast step to after end of lead keel, to be sided 2” and molded 1-3/4”. Frames in ends of boat are not to be boxed into stem, forefoot or horn timber.

Floor timbers:

There is to be a floor on every frame. Such floors are to be of white oak – sided as per plans. To bolt to stem, forefoot, amine keel and stern knee and sternpost, and horn timber, with Everdur bolts of ½” and 9/16” diameter. Bolts in floors to frames to be 5/16” diameter with generally four bolts to each arm. Floors underneath the main mast are to be made as a weldment, to form main mast step as well. This weldment to be of Everdur using plate thicknesses of 3/16” for floor plates and flanges and ¼” center plate, top plate and base plate for the Mast step. Weldment will reach for about six frames spaces. See Construction plan. A simple flanged 3/16” thick Everdur plate floor may be used in way stuffing box and or shaft.

Stem and Forefoot:

Of laminate mahogany (African) sided 401/2” at head. Molded about 4-3/4” at head and at lower end to have extra width to form proper backrabbit for planking.

Wood Keel:

Of white oak. Sided about 18” in widest part. Molded 4-7/8”

Sternpost and Knee:

Of white oak. Siding to be about 6: in way of shaft.

Horn timber:

Of white oak and fitting with a proper backrabbit for planking.


Aft of lead keel, of white oak. Deadwood to be fitting with 3/32” or 1/8” thick Everdur worm shoe which runs all the way to the rudder heel. Centerboard slot in the deadwood is to be lined with 1/8 Everdur.

Center board trunk: See Construction plan


To be 1-11/16” in thickness, streamlined and hollow with faired off trailing edge. Of cast bronze and Everdur plate. Approximate weight of board 375lbs. Hoist attachment, hanger and stop pin all to be as per final details.

Bilge Stringer:

Of Oregon pine. In two strakes laid together each 4-1/2” wide by 1-1/16” thick. To taper towards ends of boat. To fasten to every frame with Everdur screws.


Of Oregon pine 2-3/4” sided by 4” molded (up and down measure) to taper towards ends of boat. To fasten with 5/16” diameter bolts to frames.

Shelf: See construction plan.

Deck beams:

Of Sitka Spruce for all regular and half beams. Hatch and partner beams are to be of white oak. Regular beams sided: 1-3/8”, molded 2-1/2” at centerline to 2-1/8” at ends. Hatch and partner beams sized 2-1/2”. All beams to be through bolted to clam and or shelf.


Of 5/8” thick marine plywood of Philippine Mahogany. Reason for Mahogany face marine plywood being that such will be best for attaching to it the fiberglass deck covering, which is to be 9/7 oz. volan finish fiberglass cloth, laid in resin #200 and with color mixed in resin. Also to be mixed into the second and last coat of resin is skid less compound. So only two coasts of resin is to be on then second coat of resin goes on, and in that coat is both the coloring and the skid less compound. Covering board is to be of Mahogany Honduras 15/16” thick, and has securely to deck beams and edge of top strake. Fiberglass covering to extend to covering board inboard edge. Boat will have Bulwark and Rail cap of Mahogany rail cap to be varnished. Cockpit floor is to be of teak 1” thick and caulked. Cockpit seats are to be of teak about ¾” thick, and will have hatches incorporated into them

Cabin house:

Sides and ends of Honduras Mahogany, 1-18” thick. Top to be ¾” thick white cedar or Sitka spruce, and to be fiberglass covered as main deck. Beams to be of Sitka spruce regularly and of white oak hatch and partner beams. House sides raked inboard about 14 degrees and to take Nielsen-bevel design Rostand 5“ by 12” opening ports, three to a side. Hatch in housetop over stateroom to be 5/8” Lucite top. Also. MC Hatch. Raised part of cabin house to be about as shown on plans, with large, fixes windows in the sides. All glass to be shatterproof, about 3/16” thickness. Companionway is to have its slide run into metal cover for possible addition of canvas dodger. (Note: stateroom hatch should be figured as also having a canvas dodger over tilted hatch.) Housetop in general to be fitted with two vents and vent boxes, smoke head for possible cabin heater, handrails, etc. Cockpit coaming, which runs into cabin house as shown on plans, should be of Honduras Mahogany also.


A stirrup weldment, made up basically from 1-3/4” by 3/16” Everdur angle is to be fabricated and installed onto the side of the forward bulkhead between toilet room and stateroom. Stirrup to form continuous connections from its base on one bilge stringer to bilge stringer on opposite side, and to through-fasten hull-through bilge stinger and to bulkhead, frame, deck beam, and house side, and also to fasten to 3/32” thick Everdur plate in cabin house top frame.

Hull strapping:

Hull to be strapped with four diagonal 3/32” by 2-3/8” Everdur straps coming from hull plates of 1/8” thickness by about 15” by 6’0” at mainmast location. Hull plate, which also is of Everdur, is to take chain plate lugs. Chain plate lugs are to be of 5/16” thickness Everdur, LO10, cold rolled, half hard. To rivet to hull plate with Everdur rivets, all per final detail plans.

Lead Keel:

Weighing approximately 6180 lbs. Bolts of Everdur eight of 7/8” diameter and two 5/8” diameter.

Centerboard hoist:

Hoist WIRE to be 7 by 19 stainless wire of ¼” diameter. Wire is to be controlled by a winch similar to Merriman Fig. 470. Hoist is led to top of cabin house.

Fresh water tanks:

Two water tanks, one each side underneath berths in main cabin are to be installed and of total capacity of about 80 gallons. To be made of stainless of USS Gauge No.20 thickness (.037”). Properly fitted with baffles and vents, and to fill from main deck. Tanks to connect across boat underneath cabin floor and to have shut-offs at each tank. Copper tubing to be used for leads to Galley and Toilet Room Wash Basin.

Fuel Tank:

One of about 34 gallons capacity. To be on Monel of USS Gauge No.16 thickness (.062”). To have proper baffles and vent which latter is to lead out through the transom of boat and to have fill connection and supply connection – all as per later detail plans. To be located under cabin sole.



The auxiliary belt driven alternator is to be a 12 volt and will charge the 12 volt (similar to SURRETT 12-XH-25) lighting battery. Switchboard is to be made using Heinemann Circuit Breakers of proper sizes and types for the various circuits and will also include AMMETER and Voltmeter. Electric wiring to be of stranded tinned copper wire either in rubber covered or like Tirex or in plasti covered. All sizes to be as later and correctly detailed. Where need be, junction boxes of bronze should be install. The following fixtures to be used throughout cabin-four Rostand or equal no. 3612 dome lights; ten – Rostand no 2405 bracket lights, or equal. On deck: Wilcox Fig 3882 bow light, Wilcox Fig. 3885 side lights, Wilcox Fig. 3884 Stern light, Perko Fig. 913-A-Mastead light. On spreaders (Mainmast): Perko Fig.254. (All fixtures chrome plated) There will be two watertight outlets on deck, one forward and one aft.

Hand Bilge Pump:

One Edson new type No. 654 diaphragm pump in cockpit side and to discharge into cockpit well, or by hose overboard when wanted.

There is to be installed in the engineer compartment one-15-lbs CO.O. – two cylinder, with enclosed horizontal pull which leads to cockpit well. Discharge to be fitted with one diffusing nozzle.


All through hull connections (excepting inside deck scupper) are to be fitted with seacocks, similar to Wilcox “Full-Way” seacocks are through-hull connections. Cockpit scuppers are also to be fitted with seacocks.


In general in accordance with cabin plan. All structural bulkheads to be of Philippine Mahogany faced Marine Plywood, bulkhead to stirrup to be ¾’ thick rest 5/8” and ½”. Berth fronts and locker fronts, etc. also of same material and in thickness of ½” or 5/8”. Berth bottoms, etc. in thickness of 3/8” (where feasible), and can be of lesser grade marine plywood where not seen. Structural bulkheads are to bolt onto frames and deck beams with 5/16” diameter Everdur bolts. Door jambs, drawer fronts, berth rails, bureau tops, etc and swinging table to be solid Honduras Mahogany, and varnished in dull finish. Bulkheads and everything other than the Mahogany trim to be painted. Except as noted by owner. Galley dresser and stove recess to be stainless steel lined. All hardware to be of bronze, polished finish. On all locker and cupboard doors, use Getty No. 1854 latches. Cabin floor is to be of 5/8” thick teak, without holly inlay.

The following equipment to be installed throughout interior:

One Wilcox WC Figure 1593 Imperial 51, one bliss third mate.

One stainless steel dresser and wash basin top

One whale tap pump inclined bib for basin supply.

One :heritage” five burner stove to burn bottle gas.

Life Line and Pulpits:

Stanchions to be of 1” diameter. Monel tubing, with .065 wall; pulpits of same material. Gate to be arranged on S.B. side. Lifeline itself to be 3/16” diameter. Plastic covered wires lower (in the middle of the height of stanchions) line is to be installed, this one to be about 1/8” diameter wire, not covered. Height as per owner’s desire.


There will be cast bronze bow chock in Bulwark forward. There will also be on closed in the bulwark chock amidships, each side for spring lines. There will be stern corner chocks, with eye, port and B.B. Note: all chocks, and also stanchion bases can be painted Dado Brown.

Spars and rigging:

Note that the mainmast is to be aluminum, alcoa die no: #T-1808 fitted with stainless tangs and with one spreader. Rest of spars all of Sitka spruce – hollow. Builder to furnish all other spars, of Sitka spruce, and hollow. Mizzen mast of oval section main room of round section and has roller roofing gear. Mizzen boom, rectangular, hollow section, spinnaker pole of round or rectangular, hollow section. Mainmast to be painted to match varnished spars.

Mizzen mast to have tangs made of Everdur, as per detail design. Standing rigging to be 1 by 19 stainless steel, trulocked. Running wire rigging to be 7 by 19 stainless steel. Running rope rigging to be Dacron. Turnbuckles, cleats, etc. of Merriman Bros make and of bronze. Blocks of Merriman Bros. make and of ash. A 14 foot length of Genoa track is to be installed on top of CAP each side. Such track similar to Merriman Fig. 447-G, 1”, Track fitted with three slides each side.

There will be the following winches on this boat:

One Merriman Fig. 545-#3 size geared Halyard Winch, on Mainmast.

One-Merriman Fig. 395-#2 size top action winch, for Jib Halyard.

One-Merriman Fig. 395-#1 size top action winch, for Spinnaker Staysail.

Steering Gear:

Boat is to have a Pedestal type steerer as show on plans. It to work via stainless steel wire cables over large bronze sheaves to chain (non magnetic) inside pedestal column, etc. Steering wheel of aluminum with teak rim about 28”.
